    Differentiating trigeminal neuralgia

    Observe reactions when touching the facial area

    • People with typical trigeminal neuralgia (TN1) are often very afraid to touch their face because even a slight stimulus such as washing their face, shaving, brushing their teeth, eating, or a gust of wind can cause severe pain.

    • Conversely, people with atypical facial pain or trigeminal neuralgia type 2 (TN2) often tend to rub or massage the painful area to find more comfort.

    • This is an important clinical characteristic that helps doctors guide the diagnosis, but it cannot be used for self-diagnosis at home.

    Trigeminal neuralgia type 2 causes continuous pain

    • Trigeminal neuralgia type 2 (TN2) often causes a dull, burning, or aching pain that lasts for a long time in the facial area.

    • The pain can be continuous for hours or days instead of appearing in short episodes.

    • This is a more complex condition and is still not as well understood as typical trigeminal neuralgia, so treating trigeminal neuralgia type 2 is often more challenging.

    Typical trigeminal neuralgia appears in episodes

    • Typical trigeminal neuralgia (TN1) is characterized by severe, electric shock-like or stabbing pain.

    • Each pain episode usually lasts only from a few seconds to about 2 minutes, but can recur many times a day.

    • Between pain episodes, patients are usually asymptomatic or only feel mild discomfort.

    Pain location is often concentrated in the cheek and jaw

    • Trigeminal neuralgia pain often occurs in:

      • The cheek area.

      • The lower jaw or chin area.

    • Less commonly, the pain may spread to the forehead area when the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve is affected.

    • The pain usually occurs on only one side of the face, very rarely appearing on both sides simultaneously.

    Correctly identifying the type of illness helps choose the appropriate treatment method

    • Differentiating between typical trigeminal neuralgia (TN1), trigeminal neuralgia type 2 (TN2), and other causes of facial pain is very important in the treatment process.

    • Each type of disease has different symptom characteristics and response levels to medications or other procedures.
