  • If you deposit money outside of business hours or at an ATM belonging to a different bank, the transaction may take longer than the standard procedure.

Part 1: How to quickly deposit cash into an ATM

Step 1: Find an ATM of a bank that supports cash deposits.

Prioritize ATMs from the same banking system.

  • Choose an ATM belonging to your bank that has a cash deposit function for faster and less risky processing.

Quick lookup on the bank's website or app.

  • Go to the official website or app of your bank and find the "List of ATMs/Branches" section.

  • Filter by ATM type (e.g., ATMs that accept deposits) to find the right machine and avoid wasting time.

Contact the nearest branch directly.

  • Call the bank branch during business hours and ask which ATMs allow cash deposits .

  • This method is suitable if you want to make sure the ATM is working properly.

Find an ATM while on the go.

  • Open Google Maps or Waze , type the bank name + ATM (for example: "Vietcombank ATM").

  • Prioritize ATMs that display information indicating they accept deposits or are located near major branches.

Step 2: Prepare cash before depositing it into the ATM.

Count and sort the money very carefully.

  • Arrange all the banknotes side up, facing the same direction , without folding or twisting.

  • Count twice :

    • Total amount

    • Total number of banknotes

  • Example: 2 x 100,000 VND notes and 4 x 20,000 VND notes → 6 notes, total 280,000 VND .

  • Remember these numbers for reference when the ATM displays the cash count result .

Use the data to confirm the ATM is counting correctly.

  • Once the ATM has finished counting, compare the amount of money and the number of bills with the number you prepared.

  • If there is a discrepancy, you can cancel or adjust the transaction immediately , avoiding problems later.

Do not deposit damaged money into ATMs.

  • Avoid submitting torn, taped, excessively old, or excessively dirty banknotes.

  • These bills are easily rejected by ATMs or get jammed , causing transaction disruptions.

What should you do with torn or dirty banknotes?

  • Bring the money directly to the bank counter to deposit or exchange it.

  • Transactions conducted with bank staff will be safer and processed more accurately .

Step 3: Insert your ATM card into the machine and enter your PIN.

How to insert an ATM card correctly

  • Insert your ATM/debit card into the machine as illustrated on the front of the ATM .

  • Always insert the end with the chip first so the machine can recognize it accurately.

  • Typically, the cards will be placed as follows:

    • Chip facing upwards , or

    • Rotate the card 90 degrees , with the chip facing to the left (this varies depending on the ATM type).

Enter your PIN and access the transaction menu.

  • Wait for the ATM to completely swallow your card , then enter your PIN .

  • After successful verification, the screen will display a function menu , which includes the Deposit option to continue depositing cash into the ATM.

Important notes to avoid transaction errors.

  • Do not push the card too hard or pull it out halfway.

  • If you insert the card incorrectly, the ATM may not accept it or may display an error .

  • Always cover your hand when entering your PIN to protect your account information .

Step 4: Select the Deposit function on the ATM screen.

Select the deposit function.

  • On the main screen, tap Deposit to begin trading.

  • The system will then switch to a menu where you can choose the payment method, depending on the bank.

Choose the correct currency to send.

  • If the ATM displays the following options:

    • Deposit cash

    • Sending Deposit Checks

    • Deposit both cash and check.

  • If you are only sending cash, please select Deposit Cash to avoid confusion.

Deposit cash and checks at the same time (if the ATM supports it).

  • Some ATMs allow you to deposit cash and checks in the same transaction .

  • If you see the Deposit Both option, select it.

  • When prompted by the ATM, insert cash and checks into the deposit slot as instructed on the screen .

Please note this to ensure the transaction is not interrupted.

  • Read each option carefully before confirming.

  • If you choose the wrong deposit method, you can go back or cancel the transaction before inserting money into the machine.

Step 5: Choose the receiving account when depositing money into the ATM.

Identify the correct account to deposit money into.

  • After you select the sending method, the ATM will ask you to choose the receiving account .

  • If your ATM card is linked to multiple accounts , the screen will display a list for you to choose from.

How to select an account on the ATM screen

  • Choose the correct account you want to deposit money into (usually a checking or savings account).

  • Click Next to proceed to the next step.

  • If the card is only linked to a single account , the ATM will automatically proceed to the next step without requiring a selection.

The way accounts are displayed may vary.

  • Depending on the bank, the list of accounts may include:

    • Located in the dropdown menu , or

    • They are displayed as separate buttons on the screen.

Important note before confirmation

  • Double-check the account name and account type to avoid sending to the wrong account.

  • If you realize you've made the wrong choice, turn back immediately before inserting any money into the machine.

Step 6: Enter the amount to deposit into the ATM (if required).

Declare the exact amount to be paid.

  • Some ATMs will require you to enter the amount of cash you wish to deposit beforehand .

  • Please enter the exact total amount you counted earlier.

  • For example, if you want to send 350,000 VND, enter 350,000 VND on the screen.

Why is this step important?

  • The ATM will use the number you enter to compare with the amount of money the machine counts .

  • This helps detect discrepancies or missing banknotes early during the delivery process.

Complete and open the deposit slot.

  • After entering the correct amount, click Next/Continue .

  • If you operate correctly, the cash slot on the front of the ATM will automatically open for you to insert money.

When can this step be skipped?

  • If the ATM doesn't ask you to enter the amount , you can skip that step and go straight to inserting the money.

Step 7: Insert cash into the ATM's deposit slot.

How to insert money into the machine correctly

  • Insert the money according to the instructions on the ATM (insert the longer or shorter edge first, depending on the machine).

  • You can deposit the entire amount at once or in installments , selecting "Insert more bills" each time until the money is gone.

  • Once you have paid the full amount, press Next or I'm done .

Note regarding the number of banknotes

  • Each ATM only accepts a certain number of bills at a time (for example, a maximum of 100 bills).

  • Do not insert too many bills at once to avoid the machine rejecting them or jamming .

Distinguishing between deposit slots and withdrawal slots

  • The deposit slot is different from the withdrawal slot .

  • This slot is only open when you are making a deposit transaction , so don't get confused when operating it.

What should you be aware of when using ATMs that accept envelopes?

  • Some older ATMs require you to put the money in an envelope before depositing it .

  • Use the envelopes provided by the bank to ensure they are the correct size.

  • Use a pen to fill in all the information on the envelope, or

    • Fill out the deposit slip , put it in an envelope along with the cash before submitting it.

Step 8: Confirm that the ATM is counting the money correctly.

Wait for the ATM to process the transaction and check the displayed amount.

  • After inserting the money, wait a few seconds for the ATM to count it .

  • The screen will display details for each denomination , followed by the total amount deposited .

  • For example:

    • 5 banknotes with denominations of 20 to 100

    • 2 banknotes with denominations of 100 to 200

    • 37 bills with a face value of 1 → 37

    • Total: 257

  • If everything is correct, press Continue or Finish Deposit .

What to do when an ATM miscounts the money?

  • If the displayed amount doesn't match the amount you prepared, select Return my cash or press Cancel .

  • The ATM will return the full amount , and then you can start the deposit process again from scratch .

When should you change ATMs or go to a teller counter?

  • If the ATM miscounts multiple times in a row , it's very likely that the machine is malfunctioning.

  • At this point, it is advisable to:

    • Try a different ATM of the same bank , or

    • Deposit money directly at the counter during business hours to ensure safety.

Step 9: Receive your ATM card and receipt after depositing money.

Close the transaction properly.

  • After the deposit is complete, the ATM may ask , "Would you like to make another transaction?"

  • Select Yes if you want:

    • Check balance

    • Send more money

    • Withdraw money or perform other transactions.

  • Select No to close the transaction .

Get your card and receipt back.

  • When you select "finish," the ATM will return your ATM card to you.

  • At the same time, the machine can print transaction receipts for your reference.

  • Note: Some ATMs only print receipts upon request , so choose to print if needed.

Check if money has been deposited into your account.

  • In most cases, the cash will be credited to the account immediately after deposit.

  • You should double-check your balance on the screen or through your banking app for peace of mind.

Part 2: Guide to safely depositing checks into ATMs

Step 1: Find an ATM of a bank that accepts checks.

Prioritize ATMs from the same banking system.

  • Go to an ATM belonging to your bank that has deposit/cash acceptance functionality, including check deposit .

  • Most ATMs that accept deposits accept both cash and checks .

Quick lookup before you go

  • Check your bank's official website or app for a list of ATMs near you that accept checks .

  • Checking beforehand helps avoid going to the wrong ATM that doesn't support deposits .

Deposit cash and checks at the same time (if the ATM allows it).

  • Some modern ATMs allow you to deposit cash and checks in the same transaction .

  • If the ATM displays this option, you can save time when you need to send multiple types of documents.

Practical considerations when depositing checks at ATMs.

  • Not all ATMs process checks as quickly as cash.

  • The time it takes for checks to be credited to your account may be slower and depends on bank regulations .

Step 2: Endorse and verify the check before depositing it into the ATM.

Sign the back of the check correctly.

  • Sign your name in the signature box on the back of each check , or write "For deposit only" .

  • This is a mandatory step for ATMs and banks to accept and process checks .

Count the number of checks and calculate the total value.

  • Count the number of checks you are about to send.

  • Add up the total value of all the checks to find out the exact amount to be deposited.

  • Remember these numbers to compare when the ATM displays the result .

  • For example:

    • 1 check for 100

    • 1 check for 50

    • 1 check 25

    • 3 checks, total 175

Arrange the checks before inserting them into the ATM.

  • Place the check facing upwards , with both sides aligned.

  • This method helps ATMs scan information faster and more accurately .

Do not deposit poor-quality checks into ATMs.

  • Avoid sending checks that are illegible, torn, crumpled, or excessively dirty .

  • If a check is damaged, it's best to go to a bank teller for safe handling.

Step 3: Insert your ATM card into the machine and enter your PIN.

The correct procedure when starting a trade.

  • Insert your ATM/debit card into the machine, always ensuring the chip end is facing in first for accurate recognition.

  • Wait for the machine to fully recognize the card, then enter your PIN .

Go to the deposit or check menu.

  • After successful authentication, the screen will display a menu of functions .

  • In this list, you will see the option to Deposit or Deposit Checks to continue the transaction.

Note to help avoid unnecessary errors.

  • Do not insert your card upside down or remove it until the machine prompts you to.

  • Cover your hand when entering your PIN to ensure the security of your account information .

Step 4: Select the check deposit function on the ATM screen.

Start from the main menu.

  • On the screen, select Deposit to start trading.

  • The ATM will switch to a menu allowing you to choose your deposit method , depending on the bank and the type of machine.

Choose the correct check sending option.

  • When you see options like:

    • Deposit cash

    • Sending Deposit Checks

    • Deposit both cash and check.

  • Choose Deposit Checks if you are only sending checks.

Send cash and checks at the same time (if supported).

  • Some ATMs allow you to combine cash and checks in a single transaction .

  • If the ATM displays "Deposit Both ," select that option.

  • When prompted, insert the check and cash into the deposit slot as instructed .

Practical considerations when performing the operation.

  • Read each option carefully before confirming to avoid making the wrong choice.

  • If you make the wrong choice, you can go back or cancel the transaction before inserting the check into the machine.

Step 5: Choose the account to receive the check when depositing it into the ATM.

Identify the correct account to credit.

  • After selecting "send check," the ATM will ask you to choose the account to receive the money .

  • Typically, accounts will be displayed as follows:

    • Dropdown menu , or

    • Separate buttons such as Checking Account and Savings Account.

How to select and continue trading

  • Select the account you want to receive the check into .

  • Select Next to proceed to the next step.

  • When operated correctly, the cash/check slot on the front of the ATM will automatically open.

When can this step be skipped?

  • If your ATM card is only linked to one account , the ATM will automatically select it, and you don't need to perform this step .

Important note to avoid confusion.

  • Double-check the name and account type before confirming.

  • Sending money to the wrong account can waste your time tracing the transaction afterward.

Step 6: Insert the check into the ATM's deposit slot.

How to insert a check into the machine correctly

  • Insert the check according to the orientation shown on the ATM screen (put the long or short edge in first, depending on the machine).

  • You can insert all checks at once or in parts , selecting "Insert more checks" each time until you're finished.

  • Once you have provided the check, press Next or I'm done .

Limit the number of checks that can be sent at a time.

  • Many ATMs only allow a maximum number of checks to be deposited at a time .

  • This limit will be clearly displayed on the screen , for example: "Maximum 50 checks per transaction".

  • Do not exceed the limits to avoid errors or machine malfunctions .

Distinguish the correct check deposit slot.

  • Check/deposit slots are different from cash withdrawal slots .

  • This slot is only open when you are making a deposit , so please place your check in the correct position.

What should you keep in mind when an ATM asks for an envelope?

  • Some older ATMs require you to put the check in a sealed envelope before depositing it .

  • Use the envelope provided by the bank to ensure it fits the machine.

  • Fill in all the information on the envelope, or

    • Place the deposit slip in the same envelope as the check before depositing it.

Step 7: Confirm the number and value of checks when depositing them into the ATM.

Wait for the ATM to scan the check and verify each bill.

  • After inserting the check, wait a few seconds for the ATM to scan it .

  • The screen will display each scanned check in turn, along with a request to confirm the amount .

How to verify the correct check amount

  • Observe the check image on the screen.

  • Enter the correct amount written on the check for each bill.

  • Press Confirm after each check.

  • Once you have confirmed all the checks, select Continue or Finish Deposit .

Important notes to avoid mistakes.

  • If the ATM automatically displays the amount of the check , make sure the number on the screen matches the amount written on the check .

  • If the ATM reads the check incorrectly , you can re-enter the correct amount and continue the transaction.

When the ATM doesn't accept checks

  • ATMs may reject checks if the check is illegible, torn, or damaged .

  • For these checks, you should go to the bank counter to deposit them in person for safety reasons.

Step 8: Complete the transaction and receive your ATM card.

Complete the process and retrieve your card and receipt.

  • When the ATM asks, "Do you want to make another transaction?" , please:

    • Select No to complete the transaction , receive your ATM card and receipt (if you chose to print).

    • Select Yes if you want to check your balance, withdraw money, or perform other transactions .

Time it takes for a check to be credited to the account

  • Money from a check usually doesn't go into the account immediately like cash.

  • Many banks will credit the money on the next business day .

  • For example, if you send a check on Friday evening , the money will be deposited into your account on Monday .

In the case where the bank holds the check.

  • Banks may hold checks in certain situations, such as:

    • Large check amount

    • Foreign Czech Republic

    • The Czech Republic needs to verify more information.

  • The duration for which funds are held will vary depending on the regulations of each bank .

Practical advice after sending a check

  • Always keep the receipt until the money is fully credited.

  • Monitor your account on your banking app to keep track of when the money arrives.

Part 3: Is it possible to deposit money at an ATM belonging to a different bank?

Step 1: Things to note when depositing money at ATMs of different banks.

Most ATMs from other systems do not accept deposits.

  • Most banks do not allow cash or check deposits at ATMs outside their network .

  • Therefore, when you need to deposit money, you should find an ATM belonging to the bank you are using to avoid wasting time.

Withdrawals and balance checks are still possible.

  • With ATMs from other banks, you can usually still withdraw money or check your balance .

  • However, these transactions often incur fees .

Fees may apply when using ATMs outside the network.

  • You may have to pay two types of fees :

    • Fees from your bank

    • Fees from the ATM you are using

  • The specific fees vary depending on the bank and the ATM machine.

Common real-world examples

  • Chase customers will be charged a fee for each transaction made at ATMs not owned by Chase.

Step 2: Deposits made at ATMs of other banks are often delayed.

Not credited immediately when sent outside the system.

  • In the rare cases where a bank allows deposits at ATMs of a different system , the cash will not be credited to the account immediately .

  • Processing time may take up to 5 business days .

Compare with ATMs of the same bank.

  • Deposit money at an ATM belonging to your bank :

    • The money is usually deposited into the account almost immediately .

  • Depositing money at ATMs outside the network :

    • The money is received more slowly because it has to go through the interbank reconciliation step .

Understanding the concept of a "workday" correctly.

  • 5 working days, excluding :

    • Saturday, Sunday

    • Holidays and festivals

  • This makes the actual waiting time much longer than you might think.

Common real-world examples

  • If Christmas falls on a Friday and you deposit money at an ATM of a different bank on Thursday evening (December 24th) :

    • The money might not be credited to your account until January 4th , which is almost 10 days later .

Practical advice when you need money urgently.

  • Only deposit money at ATMs belonging to the same banking system if you need the cash immediately.

  • Avoid sending money outside the system before long holidays or weekends to avoid getting "stuck with cash".

Part 4: Limitations and Regulations When Depositing Money into an ATM

Step 1: Set ATM deposit limits and deposit insurance coverage levels.

ATMs have virtually no deposit limits.

  • Most banks do not set a maximum limit for ATM deposits.

  • In principle, you can deposit as much cash or as many checks as you want into your account.

But state deposit insurance has limits.

  • In the US, deposits are only insured by the federal government up to a maximum of $250,000 for:

    • Each person

    • Each bank

    • Each type of account ownership (e.g., individual, co-owner, trustee…).

  • The insurance company providing this service is the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation .

Understanding correctly to avoid risks.

  • If you have $300,000 divided into several different checking accounts but all at the same bank :

    • Only $250,000 is insured .

    • The remaining $50,000 is not protected if the bank goes bankrupt.

When do you need to pay special attention?

  • This issue only applies if the total amount you have deposited in a single bank exceeds $250,000 .

  • With such a large sum of money, consider the following:

    • Divide the money into several different banks , or

    • Utilize multiple account types to optimize your insurance coverage.

Step 2: Money deposited into an ATM cannot always be used immediately.

The time it takes for the money to be credited to your account depends on the type of deposit.

  • Cash : usually deposited into the account immediately after payment.

  • Checks : typically take 1–3 business days to process and credit.

  • In some cases, banks have the right to temporarily hold funds for up to 5 business days .

These are the situations in which banks may hold money for longer periods.

  • The total amount of checks deposited that day exceeded $5,525 .

  • Newly opened account , active for less than 30 days .

  • The account has consistently had negative balances (overdraft) in the last 6 months .

  • Checks show signs of risk , suspected fraud, or are difficult to collect due to insufficient funds in the issuer's account.

Understanding the right approach is key to proactively planning your spending.

  • "Working days" do not include weekends and public holidays .

  • Keep your deposit receipts and monitor the status on your banking app to know exactly when the funds will be available.

  • If you need money urgently, it's best to deposit cash at an ATM belonging to the same banking system .

Step 3: The ATM may temporarily stop accepting deposits when it is full.

Why isn't the ATM accepting more deposits?

  • Each ATM can only hold a certain amount of cash and checks .

  • When too many people deposit money into the same machine, the ATM's tray will become full .

  • At this point, the screen may display a message such as "ATM is currently not accepting deposits" .

How long will the error message last?

  • This status will only be removed when a bank employee comes to collect the money and maintain the machine .

  • During the waiting period, ATMs can still operate for cash withdrawals or inquiries , but they cannot accept deposits .

A quick and time-saving solution.

  • Switch to another ATM of the same bank nearby.

  • Or come back on the next business day , when the ATM has been emptied.

Practical tips to avoid this error.

  • Depositing money during business hours or early in the day is less likely to result in a full deposit.

  • Avoid depositing money at ATMs near crowded areas at the end of the day or before holidays.

Part 5: Convenient ways to deposit money into a bank online

Step 1: Send the check using your mobile banking app.

Prepare and activate online check sending.

  • Download the official app of the digital bank you are using.

  • Enable mobile deposit in your settings or services.

Steps to send a check via the app

  • Endorse the back of the check ( sign your name or write "For Deposits Only" ).

  • Follow the on-screen instructions to take photos of the front and back of the check .

  • Check that the image is clear and not cropped, then confirm sending .

Time it takes for money to be credited to the account

  • In most cases, checks will be processed within 1–3 business days .

  • The processing status can be tracked directly on the app .

Important notes to avoid rejection.

  • Only take photos when there is sufficient light, a flat background , and no glare.

  • Do not send checks that are torn, illegible, or have illegible information .

  • Keep the paper check until the money has been fully credited .

Step 2: Use an ATM linked to your digital bank to deposit money.

Prioritize ATMs that are officially linked to online banking.

  • Many digital banks have agreements that allow customers to withdraw and deposit money at partner ATMs free of charge .

  • Using linked ATMs allows for faster and more efficient money processing , similar to traditional bank ATMs.

An easy-to-understand example in real life.

  • Capital One 360 customers can:

    • Deposit and withdraw money at all Capital One ATMs.

    • Free cash withdrawals at ATMs within the Allpoint network.

  • Allpoint ATMs are typically located in familiar locations such as CVS, Walgreens, Target , and many other retail stores.

The quickest way to find a free ATM.

  • Access the official website of your digital bank.

  • Alternatively, open your banking app , go to the Free ATMs / Partner ATMs section to see a list and locations near you.

Benefits of using partner ATMs

  • No withdrawal fees.

  • Sending money is convenient even without a physical branch.

  • Suitable for online banking, fintech, and digital account users.

Step 3: Transfer money from a traditional bank to an online bank.

Use Zelle to send money quickly.

  • If both banks support Zelle , you can transfer money in minutes .

  • Transactions are usually free of charge , and funds are credited to your online account almost instantly.

Link two accounts to transfer money periodically.

  • Access the website or app of a traditional bank .

  • Add your online bank account to the external account linking section.

  • After verification, you can transfer money manually or set up automatic transfers .

Check the bank's official guidelines.

  • Each bank has a different linking process .

  • Check the Support/FAQ section on your traditional bank's website to get it right from the start.

Practical tips for getting money in quickly and safely.

  • Ensure your account information is accurate (account number, routing).

  • Process transactions during business days to shorten processing times.

  • Track the status of money transfers on your online banking app .

Important notes when depositing money at ATMs to ensure safety and avoid errors.

Always follow the instructions on the ATM screen.

  • The process of depositing money into an ATM can vary depending on the bank and the type of machine.

  • Please read carefully and follow the instructions on the screen precisely to avoid confusion.

ATMs may temporarily stop accepting deposits.

  • Although ATMs normally support deposit services, some may temporarily suspend this function .

  • Then, the screen will display a message saying the ATM is not accepting deposits .

  • You should switch to a different ATM or come back at a later time.

Prefer sending checks via banking app.

  • For checks, use your mobile banking app to send them online.

  • This method saves time , eliminates the need to go to an ATM, and allows you to monitor the processing status.

Always check and bring your ATM card after transactions.

  • Before leaving, make sure you retrieve your ATM card and receipt (if applicable).

  • Avoid leaving the machine until the ATM returns your card .

Absolute security of banking information.

  • Do not share your PIN , account number, or any other financial information with others.

  • Do not enter the PIN when someone is standing too close.

Choose a safe time and location for an ATM.

  • It is preferable to use ATMs during the day , in crowded, well-lit areas .

  • Avoid conducting transactions in secluded areas to ensure personal safety.

Expert Q&A

In-depth analysis and practical advice from leading experts.

Normally, depositing cash into an ATM of the same bank that issued your card is free. However, if you deposit money at an ATM of a different bank, some banks may charge a processing fee. Therefore, to save costs and ensure fast transactions, you should prioritize depositing cash into an ATM of the same bank.

With cash deposits at ATMs within the same bank, the money is usually credited to your account immediately. If you deposit at an ATM of a different bank or outside of business hours, the processing time may be slower, from 1–5 business days. Therefore, when you need cash immediately, choose an ATM belonging to your own bank for the transaction.

Most banks don't limit the amount you can deposit via ATM, but each deposit only accepts a maximum number of bills (e.g., 100 bills). Additionally, bank deposits are only insured up to a maximum of $250,000. Therefore, if you have a large sum of money, consider splitting your transactions or depositing it in multiple banks for added security.
