Hedgehogs are increasingly popular due to their adorable appearance and gentle nature, but not everyone knows where to start when it comes to raising them healthily at home. Understanding the correct way to care for a hedgehog at home , from choosing a suitable enclosure, food, and hygiene to daily familiarization and care, will help you avoid mistakes and raise a healthier hedgehog. This article compiles practical, easy-to-apply experiences to help you quickly learn how to properly care for a hedgehog, suitable even for first-time pet owners.

Important things to consider when keeping a pet hedgehog at home.

1. Feeding pet hedgehogs properly

  • Prioritize a high-protein, easily digestible diet, such as specialized hedgehog food or low-fat cat food.

  • Add small amounts of safe vegetables and fruits to your diet to increase your vitamin intake.

  • Avoid foods that are high in sugar, fat, or that pose a choking hazard.

  • Maintain a regular diet to support gut health and limit obesity.

2. Prepare a sufficiently spacious and well-ventilated enclosure.

  • The minimum size should be 2 x 4 feet to give the hedgehog enough space to run and jump.

  • Install an absorbent, safe flooring material such as odorless sawdust or compressed paper.

  • Provide additional features such as a running wheel, hiding places, food trays, and water bottles to allow the hedgehog to move around naturally.

  • Place the cage in a quiet location with a stable temperature to reduce stress for your pet hedgehog.

3. Maintain proper hygiene for your hedgehog.

  • Bathe your hedgehog about once a month with warm water and a specialized hedgehog shampoo.

  • Clean the belly and legs thoroughly, as these areas tend to accumulate dirt easily.

  • Trim the hedgehog's claws weekly to prevent scratches and allow it to move comfortably.

  • Change the bedding regularly to prevent odors and bacteria.

4. Daily interaction helps the hedgehog get used to people.

  • Spend at least 30 minutes each day holding, stroking, or letting your hedgehog explore your hands.

  • Regular interaction helps hedgehogs become less shy, more approachable, and develop a friendly personality.

  • Establish a fixed daily routine to help your hedgehog feel safe and accustomed to its home environment.

Tip 1: Food for pet hedgehogs: The right diet

Step 1: How to feed pet hedgehogs the right nutrition

1. Prioritize high-protein, nutritionally balanced diets.

  • The best option is specialized dry food for pet hedgehogs because the pellets are formulated to be nutritious, high in protein, and easy to digest.

  • If it's difficult to find, you can use dry cat food that is high in protein from chicken , low in fat, and free of by-products.

2. Use wet food as a reward.

  • Occasionally, you can feed your hedgehog cat pate or chicken-flavored dog pate to provide variety and moisture.

  • Use only in small amounts and do not completely replace dry food.

3. Carefully check the nutritional information before buying.

  • The fat content should be below 15% to avoid obesity.

  • An ideal protein content of around 32–35% helps hedgehogs stay healthy and active.

  • Avoid products containing by-products (animal by-products) as they can easily cause digestive problems.

4. Feed them the correct amount each day.

  • Recommended amount: 1–2 tablespoons (15–30 ml) of dry food per day.

  • You can adjust the settings up or down depending on the hedgehog's age, size, and activity level .

5. Consult a veterinarian when needed.

  • Each hedgehog has different needs. If you are unsure of the appropriate amount to feed, consult with your veterinarian for advice based on your hedgehog's specific condition.

Step 2: How to safely feed pet hedgehogs vegetables and fruits

1. Choose safe vegetables and fruits to serve as treats.

  • Can be used in small quantities: green beans, peas, corn, apples, carrots .

  • Cut the food into small cubes, the same size as dry food pellets, so that the hedgehog can eat them easily and won't choke.

  • Treat the hedgehog directly by hand or mix it into their daily food ration.

2. Avoid fruits that may be toxic.

  • Do not feed them grapes or raisins , as this food group can be harmful to the kidneys of many small animals.

3. Avoid foods that cause digestive problems.

  • Milk, bread, and dairy products can cause diarrhea in hedgehogs because their digestive systems are not suited to lactose.

  • Completely eliminate this food group to ensure stable gut health.

Step 3: How to safely feed pet hedgehogs worms and insects.

1. Choose the right type of insect as a treat.

  • Pet hedgehogs love mealworms and crickets ; these are good natural sources of protein when consumed in small amounts.

  • Only buy worms and crickets from reputable pet stores ; avoid catching them in the wild as they may contain pesticides or parasites.

2. How to properly feed live worms to hedgehogs

  • Using tweezers or forceps , pick up a live worm and hold it in front of the hedgehog to stimulate its natural hunting instincts.

  • Maintain a safe distance to avoid being bitten by the worms or scaring the hedgehog.

3. Cool the insects to make them easier to feed.

  • Spread live worms or crickets on a tray and freeze them quickly to immobilize them.

  • This method helps you easily control the amount of food and reduces the risk of the hedgehog being bitten or panicking when catching prey.

4. Feed regularly.

  • Use insects as a treat , not as a primary source of nutrition, to avoid excess protein and weight gain.

Step 4: How to feed your pet hedgehog using a suitable bowl.

1. Use a heavy bowl to prevent it from tipping over.

  • Choose a heavy ceramic or porcelain bowl with low sides so the hedgehog can easily access it without getting snagged.

  • Avoid using lightweight plastic bowls because hedgehogs can knock them over or flip them upside down , causing food to spill out and making them difficult to clean.

2. Suitable for both dry and soft foods.

  • You can use this type of bowl for dry food, pate, or treats .

  • The heavy bowl helps to secure its position, preventing it from sliding or rolling inside the cage.

3. Maintain regular hygiene.

  • Wash the bowls daily to prevent bacteria buildup and keep the food clean for your pet hedgehog.

Step 5: How to prepare safe and clean drinking water for pet hedgehogs

1. Choose the right drinking utensil.

  • Use a hanging water bottle inside the cage to minimize spills and keep the water clean for longer.

  • If you don't use a hanging water bottle, you can place a heavy, low bowl of water next to the food bowl so the hedgehog can drink more easily.

  • Avoid using lightweight plastic bowls because hedgehogs can knock them over and wet the bedding.

2. Check the water regularly throughout the day.

  • Observe the water level and add more as soon as it runs low .

  • Change the water when you see it 's cloudy, has dust in it, or if food has fallen in .

  • Keeping the water clean is a crucial step in helping hedgehogs avoid digestive and urinary tract diseases.

3. Clean the water bottle or bowl regularly.

  • Wash water containers every 1–2 days to prevent bacteria and dirt from accumulating.

  • If using a wall-mounted water dispenser, make sure to clean the drinking spout as well, as this is where limescale is most likely to accumulate.

Tip 2: Hedgehog enclosure: Size and layout

Step 1: How to choose the right size and safe cage for your pet hedgehog.

1. Ensure the cage is spacious enough for the hedgehog to move around.

  • The minimum size should be 2 ft × 4 ft (0.61 m × 1.22 m) to give the hedgehog enough space to run, explore, and place enough toys.

  • If possible, choose a larger cage to reduce stress for the hedgehog and allow it more freedom of movement.

2. Choose a safe floor for the hedgehog's paws.

  • Use solid flooring, not mesh flooring , as mesh flooring can trap feet, cause scrapes, or lead to injuries.

  • Add absorbent materials such as compressed paper or odorless sawdust to keep the cage dry and well-ventilated.

3. Consider a multi-tiered enclosure for the hedgehog to explore.

  • Enclosures with multiple levels or hiding areas provide hedgehogs with more space to move around, climb gently, and find shelter.

  • Ensure that the paths and slopes are not too slippery or too steep so that the hedgehogs can easily climb them.

4. Choose the most economical yet effective option.

  • A large, lidless plastic container is a cheap, easy-to-clean option and still provides enough space if you choose the right size.

  • Simply drill holes or attach mesh for better ventilation.

Step 2: How to place the hedgehog cage at the appropriate temperature.

1. Maintain the ideal temperature in the enclosure.

  • Maintain a temperature of around 24–27°C (75–80°F) to keep hedgehogs healthy and active.

  • Do not allow the temperature to drop below 21°C (70°F) as this can trigger hibernation in hedgehogs, posing a health risk.

2. Monitor temperature using a thermometer.

  • Place the thermometer inside the enclosure , in a low, sheltered location to measure the temperature accurately.

  • Avoid placing the thermometer near a heater to prevent inaccurate readings.

3. Avoid sources of cold wind and sudden temperature changes.

  • Do not place the cage near air conditioners, fans, open windows , areas with strong drafts, or direct sunlight.

  • Maintain a stable environment around the enclosure, avoiding excessively hot or cold temperatures.

Step 3: How to prepare safe bedding for your pet hedgehog

1. Use a paper liner to make the hedgehog feel safe.

  • Lay a layer of paper about 2.5 cm thick at the bottom of the cage to provide softness, making it more comfortable for the hedgehog to burrow into.

  • The bedding paper is highly absorbent, low-dust, and gentle on the respiratory system of pet hedgehogs.

2. Felt or soft lining fabric can be used.

  • Fleece fabric is a clean, soft, and reusable option.

  • Make sure the fabric is free of loose threads or tears, as hedgehogs can get their feet caught or entangled in the spines.

3. Completely avoid sawdust and other hazardous bedding materials.

  • Do not use sawdust or wood shavings , as wood dust can irritate the respiratory system and has even been linked to a risk of cancer in small animals.

  • Avoid fine-grained bedding like Carefresh as it can get caught in the hedgehog's spines or genitals , causing discomfort and infection.

4. Clean and replace the liner on schedule.

  • Change the bedding and clean the cage at least once a week to reduce odor and bacteria and keep the living environment clean.

  • If the hedgehog is very active or spills water, check and change the bedding sooner.

Step 4: Arrange toys and hiding places for your pet hedgehog to move around comfortably.

1. Add toys to keep the hedgehog busy.

  • Place items such as small bells, plastic balls, tunnels , or simple toys in the cage for the hedgehog to explore.

  • Choose toys that are sturdy, without sharp edges or small holes where feet could get caught.

2. Prepare a safe hiding place and resting spot.

  • Use igloos, shelter boxes, or fabric burrows to provide hedgehogs with hiding spaces.

  • Hedgehogs are nocturnal animals, so having a hiding place helps them reduce stress and get enough sleep.

3. Attach wheels to provide daily exercise for the hedgehog.

  • Choose wheels with a solid, non-mesh surface to avoid getting your foot caught or getting injured.

  • Place the wheel in a stable, low-vibration position so the hedgehog can run safely throughout the night.

4. Use tunnels and pipes for the hedgehog to explore.

  • Smooth plastic tubes or flexible pipes help hedgehogs burrow, run, and practice their navigational instincts.

  • Make sure the pipe is wide enough so the hedgehog doesn't get stuck inside.

Step 5: How to place your pet hedgehog's cage in a quiet location to reduce stress.

1. Prioritize quiet spaces.

  • Place the hedgehog cage in a quiet room , a secluded workspace, or a hallway with minimal foot traffic.

  • Avoid areas with loud music, TV, children running around, or the constant sound of doors opening and closing.

2. Minimize sudden noises.

  • Pet hedgehogs are very sensitive to loud noises, easily startled, and become overly alert.

  • Maintain a stable environment; avoid playing loud music or making sudden noises near the enclosure.

3. Create a sense of security for the hedgehog.

  • A quiet environment helps hedgehogs sleep soundly during the day , reducing stress and leading to more stable behavior at night.

  • Combine this with hiding places in the cage so the hedgehog has a place to retreat to when it feels uncomfortable.

Tip 3: How to bathe and trim the nails of a pet hedgehog

Step 1: How to bathe a pet hedgehog correctly and safely.

1. Bathe your hedgehog about once a month.

  • Pet hedgehogs are generally quite clean, but they can still get dirty from running, jumping, and digging.

  • Taking a shower once a month will help remove dirt and unpleasant odors, and also help check the skin and calluses.

2. Prepare the bathwater at the appropriate level.

  • Pour warm water into a basin or sink, about 2.5 cm deep, just enough to cover your feet and lower abdomen.

  • Avoid using water that is too hot or too cold to prevent thermal shock.

3. Gently place the hedgehog in the water.

  • Support the hedgehog by its belly and gently lower it down.

  • Avoid letting water touch the hedgehog's face, nose, and ears , as hedgehogs are easily irritated or susceptible to water getting into their ears.

4. Properly clean the spines and abdomen.

  • Use a soft brush or toothbrush to gently brush in the direction of the spines growing.

  • Use your fingertips to gently massage the area under your belly – this is a sensitive area, so be slow and light.

5. Dry the hedgehog immediately after bathing.

  • Remove the hedgehog from the water and pat it dry thoroughly with a soft towel .

  • Keep the hedgehog in a warm, draft-free place until it is completely dry to prevent it from getting cold.

Step 2: How to safely and correctly trim your pet hedgehog's nails.

1. Inspect your nails regularly to know when they need trimming.

  • Hedgehog claws grow quite quickly, so they need to be trimmed regularly .

  • When handling a hedgehog, gently stroke its paws. If the claws scratch your hand , it's time to trim them.

2. Prepare and relax the hedgehog before cutting.

  • Gently hold the hedgehog's paws and wait a few seconds for them to relax.

  • Avoid pressing too hard, as this may startle the hedgehog or cause it to retract its legs.

3. Trim your nails with very small strokes.

  • Use nail clippers designed for small pets to ensure accuracy.

  • Trim only a very small portion at the tip of the nail , avoiding cutting too deep as this will damage the blood vessels inside.

  • If the claw starts to bleed , it means you've cut too much; keep the hedgehog still and use styptic powder or a clean cloth to gently press on it.

4. Seek assistance from a veterinarian if you encounter any difficulties.

  • If your hedgehog is too timid or you're not confident trimming its nails yourself, ask your veterinarian to schedule regular nail trimming appointments.

  • This helps avoid unnecessary injuries and ensures that the nails are trimmed correctly.

Step 3: How to care for pet hedgehogs during quilling (shrinking) to reduce discomfort.

Quilling is the process of hedgehogs shedding and growing new spines , similar to babies losing their baby teeth. This is completely normal as hedgehogs grow, but it can be a little uncomfortable for them. Here are some simple ways to help hedgehogs feel less pain and more comfortable.

1. Take an oatmeal bath to soothe your skin.

  • Prepare a clean sock and put whole-grain oats inside.

  • Place a bag of oatmeal in warm bathwater to create a soothing bath.

  • Bathe your hedgehog as usual; this helps reduce dry skin and irritation during the molting period.

2. Limit cuddling; allow the hedgehog to move freely in your hands.

  • When quilling, hedgehogs' bodies are often more sensitive to impact.

  • Instead of holding the hedgehog close, let it crawl on your hand ; this provides a sense of security without causing pain.

3. Observe the hedgehog's behavior and allow it to rest when needed.

  • Hedgehogs that are shedding their spines may be irritable or grumpy .

  • If you notice a hedgehog reacting strongly to your touch, let it rest and limit interaction.

Tip 4: Secrets to keeping pet hedgehogs healthy and free from disease.

Step 1: How to play with and cuddle your pet hedgehog daily to build a bond.

Pet hedgehogs are often a little shy when they first come home, but with regular interaction, they will quickly get used to your scent and sounds and become more friendly. Here are some ways to help you build trust with your hedgehog.

1. Interact for at least 30 minutes each day.

  • Hold and play with your hedgehog outside its cage for about 30 minutes each day so that it gets used to your scent and smell.

  • This habit helps reduce shyness and increase sociability.

2. Approach the hedgehog gently and slowly.

  • Approach the hedgehog quietly, avoiding startling it.

  • To handle a hedgehog, slide your hand under its belly and lift it into a snug, secure position.

3. Maintain a confident attitude when handling hedgehogs.

  • Hedgehogs sense awkwardness; therefore, hold them securely and calmly .

  • This helps the hedgehog feel more secure and reduces its defensive reaction.

4. Let the hedgehog explore your body.

  • Let the hedgehog sniff your hand , crawl on your lap, or explore the area where you're sitting.

  • You can roll a small ball for the hedgehog to chase — a simple activity that helps them exercise and become accustomed to their environment.

Step 2: How to monitor your pet hedgehog's health to detect early signs of abnormalities.

Pet hedgehogs are very good at hiding illness , so observing their daily habits is extremely important. Below is a guide to help you identify problems early and know when to take your hedgehog to the vet.

1. Observe daily eating habits and behavior.

  • Monitor your hedgehog's food and water intake. Any noticeable changes could be a sign of health problems.

  • When handling a hedgehog, check its spines, skin, and feet for early signs of scratches, parasites, or dry skin.

2. Recognize the signs of abnormalities that require immediate medical attention.

  • Skipping meals or drinks for more than two days could be related to fatty liver disease or another serious medical condition.

  • Dry, scaly skin around the base of the spines: often caused by mites/ticks irritating the skin and causing the spines to fall off.

  • Wheezing or a whistling sound during breathing: this could be a respiratory infection and requires prompt treatment.

  • Soft stools or diarrhea: This could indicate that the hedgehog has intestinal parasites or a digestive disorder.

  • Lack of activity and a cold belly are typical signs of hibernation , a dangerous condition that requires prompt attention by warming the animal and taking it to a veterinarian.

3. Regular check-ups are essential for early detection of diseases.

  • Each time you pick up a hedgehog, take a few seconds to check its spines, skin, legs, eyes, and nose .

  • Record changes in weight, sleep habits, and nighttime activities to detect abnormalities more quickly.

4. Take your hedgehog to the veterinarian if you have any suspicions.

  • Pet hedgehogs should be examined by a small animal specialist if they exhibit any of the symptoms listed above.

  • Early treatment helps reduce complications and improve recovery chances.

Step 3: How to respect your pet hedgehog's nocturnal circadian rhythm.

Hedgehogs are nocturnal animals, so understanding and respecting their natural habits helps them live more comfortably and with less stress.

1. Allow hedgehogs to sleep and wake according to their natural rhythm.

  • Hedgehogs typically sleep during the day and begin running around and searching for food when it gets dark.

  • Avoid waking hedgehogs in the middle of their sleep, as this can cause them stress and irritability .

  • Let hedgehogs wake up, play, and eat at the times that feel natural to them.

2. Adjust the cage's location if you are easily disturbed.

  • Because hedgehogs are highly active at night (running on wheels, digging, exploring), the noise can disrupt your sleep.

  • If you're not used to staying up late, place the hedgehog's cage outside the bedroom , such as in the hallway, study, or other quiet corner of the house.

  • The new location still needs a stable temperature, little wind, and minimal noise to avoid stressing the hedgehogs.

3. Create conditions for hedgehogs to exercise on a regular schedule.

  • Provide toys, a running wheel, and hiding places so the hedgehog can move around comfortably at night.

  • During the day, keep the space quiet and the lighting soft so the hedgehog can get enough sleep.

How to safely take pet hedgehogs outside and important legal considerations.

Pet hedgehogs may love to explore the outdoors, but you need to ensure their safety and comply with local laws before letting them out.

1. Take pet hedgehogs outside properly.

  • Only take your hedgehog outside when the temperature is suitable , not too hot or too cold (similar to the temperature you maintain in its cage).

  • Always stay close to prevent the hedgehog from escaping, getting caught in bushes, or encountering other animals.

  • Choose an area free of pesticides, chemicals, or sharp objects .

  • Do not use hamster running balls , as their round and narrow structure can cause spinal injuries and make it difficult for hamsters to breathe.

2. Check the legal regulations before raising hedgehogs.

  • Hedgehogs are considered exotic pets , so some places may ban or restrict their ownership.

  • Before adopting a pet, check local laws or pet regulations to ensure you are legally permitted to keep one.

  • Understanding the regulations helps avoid legal risks and ensures you can take your hedgehog to the veterinarian when needed.
