If applied correctly, you will not only save money quickly but also develop smart long-term financial management habits.

Tip 1: Easy Ways to Save Electricity and Water at Home

Method 1: Unplug Devices When Not in Use

Turn off and unplug devices before leaving home

Unplugging electrical devices when not in use is a simple but very effective way to save electricity and money. Many devices still consume power in standby mode, causing your electricity bill to increase without you realizing it.

  • Unplug devices like TVs, microwaves, coffee makers, computers, or Wi-Fi modems when not in use for many hours.

  • When traveling or away from home for an extended period, remember to check and disconnect all unnecessary devices.

  • Prioritize turning off and unplugging devices with indicator lights or standby mode, as they still consume phantom power.

Unplug your phone charger immediately after it's fully charged

If phone chargers are continuously plugged into an outlet, they still consume a small amount of electricity. While this habit may not cost much in a single day, it can increase electricity costs over the long term.

  • After your phone is fully charged, unplug the charger from the outlet instead of just the cable from the phone.

  • Avoid charging overnight if not necessary to prevent electricity waste.

  • Make it a habit to check power outlets before leaving home to reduce monthly household electricity costs.

Method 2: Reduce Heating and Cooling Costs

Lower heater temperature when not needed

Adjusting indoor temperature appropriately is an effective way to save electricity that many families adopt. By simply reducing the temperature of heaters or warming devices by a few degrees, monthly energy costs can decrease significantly.

  • When it's cold, wear an extra jacket, sweater, or use a thin blanket instead of increasing the heater temperature.

  • Maintain a moderate indoor temperature to avoid unnecessary electricity or fuel consumption.

  • Utilize daylight to warm living spaces.

Use natural ventilation instead of air conditioning

On days when the weather isn't too hot, you can utilize natural airflow to cool your home instead of continuously running the air conditioner. This is a simple but very effective tip to save electricity.

  • Open windows in the morning or afternoon to let in fresh air and circulate it throughout the house.

  • Use fans instead of air conditioning when outdoor temperatures are pleasant.

  • Develop a habit of utilizing natural ventilation to reduce monthly household electricity costs.

Method 3: Save Money When Buying Furniture

Choose good used furniture instead of buying new

One of the fastest ways to save money when shopping for household items is to look for used furniture that is still in good condition. Many items are sold at a much lower price than new ones but are still durable.

  • Look for good used furniture on classifieds sites or household clearance groups.

  • Prioritize items that are less prone to damage, such as sturdy tables, shelves, wooden cabinets, or sofas.

  • Carefully check the condition before buying to avoid incurring repair costs.

Take advantage of clearance sales or second-hand markets

Many families sell their furniture when moving or redecorating. This is an opportunity to buy affordable but still good quality furniture.

  • Visit clearance sales, garage sales, or second-hand markets to find reasonably priced furniture.

  • Compare multiple places before deciding to buy to maximize savings.

  • Many items are negotiable, helping you further reduce shopping costs.

Repair or re-upholster chairs instead of buying new

When chairs or sofas start to look old, you don't necessarily have to replace all your furniture. Repairing or re-upholstering can make the item look new at a much lower cost.

  • Re-upholster chairs or sofas with new fabric to extend their lifespan.

  • Repair small details like chair legs, seat cushions, or upholstery fabric.

  • This method helps save money on new furniture while keeping your living space tidy.

Resell usable old furniture

If you want to change the furniture in your home, don't rush to discard items that are still in good condition. Selling them can help recover some of the cost.

  • Post them for sale on classifieds sites or second-hand buying/selling groups.

  • Take clear photos and describe the product's condition to make it easier to sell.

  • Many people are looking for affordable furniture, so you might sell it quite quickly.

Method 4: Reuse Bathwater for Flushing Toilets

Reuse bathwater to reduce water bill

A simple but quite effective tip for the fastest way to save money in household expenses is to reuse water that has already been used. If your living area charges based on water consumption, reusing water can significantly reduce your monthly costs.

  • After showering, use a bucket or basin to collect water from the bathtub instead of letting it all drain away.

  • Keep this water to flush the toilet when needed.

  • This method helps reduce the amount of fresh water used for flushing toilets – which accounts for a significant portion of household consumption.

Apply when you want to quickly reduce living expenses

While not everyone applies it regularly, this is a useful solution if you are looking to save on living expenses in the short term.

  • Suitable for families who want to reduce their monthly water bill.

  • Can be applied during periods when spending cuts are necessary.

  • Combine with other habits such as turning off faucets when not in use to optimize costs.

Method 5: Save Money by Staying Home More

Limit going out, prioritize activities at home

One of the fastest ways to save money on daily expenses is to cut down on costly outside activities such as bars, restaurants, or cafes. By simply changing your entertainment habits, you can save a significant amount of money each month.

  • Instead of going out often, organize gatherings with friends at home for conversations or drinks.

  • Prepare light snacks or simple drinks to save money and be more comfortable.

  • This habit helps significantly reduce food and entertainment costs.

Cook at home instead of eating out

Eating out or ordering food frequently is a major expense for many people. Cooking at home not only saves money but also helps control nutrition better.

  • Aim to only order food or get takeout 1-2 times per week.

  • When you want to meet friends, you can invite them over for dinner or cook together.

  • Buy ingredients weekly to reduce food costs and minimize waste.

Entertain at home instead of spending money on the cinema

You don't always need to go to the cinema for an exciting entertainment experience. You can create enjoyable entertainment at home that is both economical and comfortable.

  • Wait for movies to be released on streaming platforms or discs to watch them at home for a lower cost.

  • Organize movie nights at home with family or friends.

  • This method helps save money on tickets, food, and transportation costs.

Brew coffee at home instead of buying it every morning

The daily habit of buying coffee may seem small, but it can quickly increase your spending.

  • Instead of buying coffee to go, brew coffee at home before work.

  • Prepare a thermos to take with you when you go out.

  • By simply changing this habit, you can save a significant amount of money every week.

Tip 2: How to reduce travel costs and gas money every month

Method 1: Money-saving tips for driving

Carpool to reduce travel costs

If you frequently commute to work or participate in outside activities, carpooling is one of the fastest ways to save money when traveling by car.

  • Invite colleagues to carpool to work and share gas costs.

  • When going out or attending events, carpool with friends instead of each driving their own car.

  • Sharing costs significantly reduces gas money and vehicle operating expenses.

Choose a gas station with good prices

Gas prices can vary between stations in the same area. With a little attention, you can save a significant amount of money over time.

  • Compare gas prices at stations near your home or workplace.

  • Prioritize filling up at locations with low and stable prices.

  • Even if you save a small amount each time you fill up, the total monthly cost will noticeably decrease.

Limit AC use when the weather is cool

The car's air conditioning consumes extra fuel, especially when traveling short distances.

  • When the weather is pleasant, open the windows for natural air circulation.

  • Only turn on the air conditioning when absolutely necessary, especially for short trips.

  • This habit helps reduce the car's fuel consumption.

Wash your car yourself instead of going to a shop

Washing your car at professional services can be quite expensive if you do it every week.

  • Prepare a bucket of water, soap, and a cleaning cloth to wash your car at home.

  • You can invite friends or family to help save costs and create a fun activity.

  • This method helps reduce car maintenance costs and is part of the fastest way to save money on daily expenses.

Method 2: Save money with public transportation

Prioritize using public transportation

If your area has a convenient public transportation system, this is one of the fastest ways to save money on daily travel costs. Taking the bus, subway, or train is often much cheaper than driving yourself.

  • Use buses, subways, or trains to commute to work or travel around the city.

  • You can save money on gas, parking fees, and vehicle maintenance costs.

  • In many cases, public transportation also helps avoid traffic jams and ensures more stable travel.

Familiarize yourself with local bus schedules

Knowing the schedules of bus routes helps you be more proactive in your travel and make the most of public transportation.

  • Check the schedules and bus routes near your home or workplace.

  • Choose convenient routes to reduce waiting and travel time.

  • Many bus routes can get you to your destination just as fast as driving your own car.

Buy a monthly pass if you travel frequently

If you use public transportation every day, a monthly pass often significantly reduces costs.

  • Purchase a monthly bus or train pass to save money compared to buying single tickets.

  • Suitable for commuters or students who travel frequently every day.

  • This is a very effective long-term travel money-saving tip.

Limit taxi use when not absolutely necessary

Taxis or ride-sharing services are convenient, but costs can quickly add up if used frequently.

  • Only use taxis when necessary or when no other options are available.

  • If you plan to go out and cannot drive yourself, arrange for a ride home beforehand.

  • Limiting taxi use significantly reduces monthly travel expenses.

Method 3: Money-saving tips when booking flights

Book flights at the right time

The timing of booking greatly affects the cost of the flight. By planning smartly, you can apply the fastest way to save money when booking flights.

  • Avoid booking too close to the flight date as ticket prices usually increase sharply during this period.

  • Plan your trip early to have more options for flight times and prices.

  • Monitor ticket prices a few weeks in advance to choose the optimal booking time.

Don't book too early for domestic flights

Many people think that booking earlier means cheaper tickets, but this isn't always the case.

  • For many domestic flights, booking too early (about 3-4 months in advance) may not always offer the best prices.

  • Airlines often release promotions or special offers during specific periods.

  • Monitor discount information to find cheap flight tickets.

Only bring carry-on luggage if possible

Checked baggage fees can significantly increase the total cost of your flight, especially for short trips.

  • For weekend or short trips, pack light to bring your luggage into the cabin.

  • Avoiding checked baggage fees helps reduce the overall flight cost.

  • Organize your belongings smartly to optimize space in your carry-on luggage.

Method 4: Save money by walking or cycling

Prioritize walking or cycling for short distances

If you live in an area with many nearby places, walking or cycling is one of the fastest ways to save money on daily travel costs. This habit significantly reduces gas money, parking fees, and vehicle-related expenses.

  • Walk or cycle when going to the market, shopping, or to nearby places.

  • Limit using motorcycles or cars for short distances.

  • Besides saving money, you also increase physical activity and improve your health.

Cycle for distances that seem far

Many distances can actually be cycled faster than you think, especially in crowded urban areas.

  • A distance of about 1-2 km usually only takes about 15-20 minutes to cycle.

  • Cycling helps avoid traffic jams and save on fuel costs.

  • This is a suitable solution for commuting to school, work, or short trips within the city.

Incorporate walking into your weekly exercise routine

Instead of spending all your workout time at the gym, you can use walking to exercise and save money.

  • Spend about 1 hour walking each week instead of a paid workout session.

  • You can break this time into 10-15 minutes of walking each day.

  • This habit helps reduce living expenses and maintain long-term health.

Tip 3: Grocery shopping tips for a budget-friendly and nutritious week

Method 1: Plan before you shop

Prepare a list before going to the supermarket

Planning before shopping is one of the fastest ways to save money on groceries. With a clear list, you will focus on what you truly need and avoid unplanned spending.

  • Write down all the food and supplies needed for the week before you go shopping.

  • Only buy items on the list to avoid impulse purchases.

  • Go to the supermarket fewer times a week to reduce the likelihood of buying unnecessary items.

Limit shopping time

The longer you spend at the supermarket, the higher the chance of buying unplanned items.

  • Aim to complete your shopping within 30–60 minutes.

  • Focus on the areas with the products you need instead of wandering around the supermarket.

  • Limiting your time helps to reduce unnecessary impulse spending.

Go grocery shopping after eating a full meal

Mood and hunger can directly affect purchasing decisions.

  • Eat a snack before going to the supermarket to reduce food cravings.

  • When you're not hungry, you'll have better control over your food choices.

  • This habit helps limit excessive food purchases and is a smart tip for saving money on groceries.

Method 2: Shop smartly to save money

Choose stores with reasonable prices and consistent quality

A smart shopper always compares prices before making a decision. This is an important step in the fastest way to save money when shopping for groceries and household items.

  • Prioritize supermarkets or stores with stable and reasonable prices.

  • Avoid choosing high-end stores just for their attractive image or display.

  • Food and consumer goods prices in these places are often higher and increase weekly shopping costs.

Prioritize private-label or generic brand products

Many non-famous brand products still offer good quality but are significantly cheaper.

  • Choose supermarket private-label or generic brand products.

  • Compare ingredients and quantities before buying.

  • This method helps reduce the cost of food and household items while maintaining quality.

Utilize discount coupons and promotions

Using offers correctly is a very effective money-saving tip when shopping.

  • Look for discount codes or promotional coupons on websites, shopping apps, or supermarket flyers.

  • Only use discount coupons for products you genuinely need.

  • Avoid buying unnecessary items just because they are on promotion.

Cook at home instead of buying pre-made food

Pre-made food is often more expensive than preparing meals at home.

  • Buy fresh ingredients and cook at home to reduce costs.

  • Prepare meals for several days to save time and money.

  • This habit helps to significantly reduce food expenses each week.

Buy in bulk when products are on sale

If an item you frequently use is on sale, buying a little extra can lead to long-term savings.

  • Stock up on frequently used products when they are on promotion.

  • Only buy quantities that can be used before they expire.

  • This helps reduce shopping costs for future purchases.

Buy long-lasting products in bulk

Some items can be purchased in large quantities to save money.

  • Buy toilet paper, paper towels, laundry detergent, or household items in large packs.

  • The price per unit is usually cheaper when buying in bulk.

  • This should only be applied if you have enough storage space at home.

Method 3: Save money in the kitchen

Use up all purchased food

One of the fastest ways to save money when managing food in the family is to limit waste. Many families spend a lot of money on food but then throw a lot of it away because they don't use it in time.

  • Plan to cook all purchased food within the week.

  • If there are still many fresh ingredients in the fridge, avoid buying new food.

  • Prioritize using available ingredients to reduce food shopping costs.

Store food properly

How food is stored directly affects its shelf life and the amount of waste.

  • Put food in the refrigerator immediately after use to keep it fresh longer.

  • Fruits like strawberries can be stored in an airtight container with paper towels to absorb moisture.

  • Herbs like dill or cilantro can be stored in paper bags to extend their shelf life.

Freeze food for longer use

Freezing is an effective way to extend the shelf life of many types of food.

  • Store bread in the freezer and toast it when needed.

  • This method helps prevent bread from molding and being thrown away.

  • Many other foods like meat, vegetables, or broths can also be frozen to save money.

Prioritize cooking foods that are nearing expiration

Monitoring food in your kitchen helps you avoid forgetting about and throwing away items that are still usable.

  • Regularly check your fridge and pantry to identify foods nearing their expiration date.

  • Cook meals using ingredients that need to be used soon, such as dry pasta, vegetables, or opened food packages.

  • This habit helps reduce food waste and effectively save money.

Tip 4: Small habits to help you have more money

Method 1: Smart clothing shopping to save money

Choose stores with reasonable prices

You can still dress well without spending too much money. Choosing the right place to shop is one of the fastest ways to save money when buying clothes.

  • Look for fashion stores with reasonable prices that still ensure quality.

  • You don't necessarily have to shop at high-end stores to find nice clothes.

  • Compare prices between several stores to reduce clothing shopping costs.

Wait for sales before buying

Many fashion items are heavily discounted after only a short time on display.

  • If you see an item you like, don't buy it immediately.

  • Keep an eye on seasonal promotions or sales.

  • Many products can be discounted by 30–50% off the original price, leading to significant savings.

Keep receipts when shopping

Some stores have a policy to refund the price difference if an item goes on sale after you've purchased it.

  • Save your purchase receipts to check for sales later.

  • If a product goes on sale shortly after your purchase, you may be able to receive the price difference at some stores.

  • This habit helps protect consumer rights and save costs.

Explore second-hand or consignment stores

Second-hand stores can be a treasure trove for unique items at very low prices.

  • Visit second-hand shops or clothing consignment stores.

  • Many items are still new or lightly used but cost much less than new ones.

  • This is a money-saving clothing tip adopted by many.

Method 2: Save money while exercising

Exercise outdoors instead of going to the gym

You don't need to spend a lot of money on a gym to have a healthy body. Outdoor exercise is one of the fastest ways to save money while maintaining an effective exercise routine.

  • Outdoor jogging is a simple, effective, and completely free exercise.

  • Parks, sidewalks, or quiet residential areas can all become workout spots.

  • This helps save on monthly gym fees.

Choose classes with reasonable costs

If you enjoy yoga, dance, or group fitness classes, there are still many ways to reduce costs.

  • Purchase a monthly pass or long-term package for discounted rates per session.

  • Look for donation-based classes where you can pay what you can afford.

  • Keep an eye out for promotions to save on workout costs.

Workout at home with guided videos

The internet offers a wealth of free or low-cost workout resources.

  • Find online workout tutorial videos that suit your goals.

  • You can purchase online workout courses for much less than a gym membership.

  • You can still get an effective workout right at home.

Establish a home workout routine

Many effective exercises don't require complex equipment.

  • Perform push-ups, crunches, squats, or planks right at home.

  • If needed, invest in a small set of weights or resistance bands.

  • These exercises help maintain fitness without significant cost.

Method 3: Save money when eating out

Have a snack before going to a restaurant

When you're too hungry, it's easy to order more food than you need. A simple tip for saving money quickly when dining out is to have a snack before leaving.

  • Eat a little something at home to reduce hunger when ordering.

  • This way, you'll order just enough instead of too much.

  • This significantly helps reduce the cost of dining at restaurants.

Split the bill clearly when with a group

Eating with a large group often makes splitting the bill complicated, and it's easy to pay more than your share.

  • Ask for separate bills from the start if the restaurant allows it.

  • Each person pays for their own share to avoid confusion or overpaying.

  • This method helps control dining costs when out with friends.

Have a drink at home before going to a bar

Drinks at bars are often quite expensive, especially in city centers.

  • If you're not driving, you can have a little to drink at home before going out.

  • When you arrive at the bar, just order a couple more drinks instead of many rounds.

  • This helps to significantly reduce drink costs when going out.

Choose establishments with promotional hours

Many restaurants and bars offer discounts during specific hours.

  • Prioritize places with happy hour or drink specials.

  • Go during promotional hours to save money when dining out.

  • This is a smart spending tip when going out with friends.

Cut unnecessary expenses

Eliminate non-essential expenses

If your goal is to find the fastest way to save money, the most crucial step is to cut non-essential expenses in the short term. By strictly controlling your spending, you'll see your savings increase significantly.

  • Temporarily limit eating out, going to the movies, or unnecessary shopping.

  • Only spend money on essential needs like food, transportation, and living expenses.

  • Apply spending discipline for a period to increase your savings faster.

Utilize small daily savings

Many people often overlook small expenses, but these costs accumulate into large amounts over time.

  • Choose cheaper coffee or make coffee at home.

  • When eating out with friends, you can share portions instead of ordering many separate dishes.

  • Use discount coupons or promotions when buying groceries.

  • Take advantage of special offers to reduce daily living expenses.

Small but practical changes in spending habits can make a big difference. When consistently applied, this is indeed the fastest way to save money and improve personal finances in a short period.

Practical knowledge

Expert Q&A

In-depth analysis and practical advice from leading experts.

To save money effectively with a modest income, the most important rule is to prioritize setting aside an emergency fund as soon as you receive your salary, rather than waiting until the end of the month. Start with small amounts, around 10% of your income, and focus on cutting fixed expenses such as utilities, telecommunication bills, or limiting eating out. Maintaining the habit of tracking daily expenses through an app will help you tightly control your cash flow, thereby accumulating a surplus without feeling too much pressure.

The secret to economical grocery shopping lies in planning a detailed weekly menu and strictly sticking to the shopping list to avoid splurging on unnecessary items. You should prioritize buying seasonal produce at wholesale markets or take advantage of supermarket promotions to get the best prices. Additionally, cooking at home and preparing packed lunches for the office not only ensures hygiene and adequate nutrition but also saves a significant amount of money compared to ordering food from outside.

To achieve big goals like buying a house or a car in a short period, you need to apply a strict financial management strategy such as the 50/30/20 rule. In doing so, strive to maximize your savings rate by simplifying your lifestyle and seeking additional passive income streams alongside your main job. Simultaneously with tightening spending, you should open a term deposit or make safe investments to let your money grow, helping you sustainably shorten the distance to your financial goals.
