Cách thanh toán hóa đơn online bằng ACH: 4 lợi ích khi dùng ACH-Tiptory

Paying bills online using ACH is becoming increasingly popular among online banking users due to its speed, low fees, and high security . While you may not be familiar with the term ACH, you've likely used it before to pay for electricity, water, internet, or other recurring services through your bank account. This article will help you understand what ACH is, how online bill payments using ACH work , differentiate between common methods, and why it's a suitable payment solution for Vietnamese users who want to manage their spending effectively, proactively, and with greater peace of mind in the digital age.

Things to know when paying with ACH

Make ACH credit card payments via online banking.

  • Log in to the Internet Banking or Mobile Banking of the bank/credit union you are using.

  • Choose either online bill payment or recurring transfer to create an ACH credit order.

  • Enter the recipient's information and the amount, and you will be the one to proactively transfer money from your account.

  • This method is suitable when you want to control each payment and minimize potential risks.

Set up ACH debit payments by providing account information.

  • Provide your bank account number and routing number to your service provider.

  • Businesses will be allowed to automatically deduct money from your account at the agreed-upon intervals.

  • This method is commonly used to pay for electricity, water, internet, insurance, or other recurring monthly services.

Enjoy the convenience of automatic bill payments with ACH.

  • Bills are paid on time each month, reducing the risk of forgetting to pay or incurring late payment penalties.

  • It helps you manage your expenses effectively , without the need for repeated manual operations.

  • Increased peace of mind thanks to the secure, stable, and less expensive ACH payment process compared to many other methods.

Part 1: What is ACH Credit? How to transfer money quickly through the bank.

Step 1: Register for online bill payment via bank.

Sign up for online bill payment services (bill pay) at your bank or credit union.

  • Access Internet Banking or Mobile Banking and register for the online bill payment feature.

  • When using bill pay, you authorize the bank to pay a specific business on your behalf from your account.

  • Transactions are processed directly through the banking system, usually in the form of ACH payments , ensuring stability and security.

There is no need to provide bank information to the service provider.

  • Since the payment is made through a bank, you don't need to provide your account number or routing number to the business.

  • This helps reduce the risk of financial information being leaked when paying bills for electricity, water, internet, or other recurring services.

This is a suitable solution if you are concerned about data security.

  • If you feel uncomfortable sharing your bank account number, Bill Pay is a safer option than setting up direct payments with the business.

  • You maintain control over your cash flow while taking advantage of the convenience of paying bills online with ACH without worrying about security.

Step 2: Find and link businesses that need payment.

Find the business name in the bank's bill of payments list.

  • Access the online bill payment option in your Internet Banking or Mobile Banking.

  • Use the search box or dropdown menu to find the business you want to pay for (electricity, water, internet, insurance, etc.).

  • Select the correct business, then enter the information to link your payment account .

What to do if a business is not found in the list?

  • Call the bank's customer service hotline or use the chat support feature on the app.

  • Ask for clarification on how to pay the bill online using Bill Pay or ACH for that business.

  • The bank will guide you through adding a craft business or suggest a suitable payment option.

Have your most recent invoice ready to enter the correct information.

  • When setting up bill payments, you should have the most recent business invoice alongside your bill of payment.

  • The information that usually needs to be provided includes:

    • Name and address of the business

    • Name of the contract/service holder (if different from the name of the bank account holder)

    • Customer code or account number at the business

Step 3: Choose a suitable payment date and amount.

Enter the payment date and the amount to be paid.

  • You can proactively choose your payment date when using Bill Pay or paying bills online with ACH.

  • In fact, it's best to choose the exact due date provided by the business, or 1–2 days earlier.

  • This method gives you time to address any invoice errors before the money is deducted from your account.

Understanding the correct timing of payment recognition.

  • With online bill payments, the date you select is the date the bank records the payment .

  • Even if the business receives the payment 1–2 days later, the system will still show that you paid on the agreed date.

  • This helps you avoid late payment fees in most cases.

Check if the business supports electronic payments.

  • If the business doesn't accept electronic payments , the bank will send a paper check on your behalf.

  • In that case, it's advisable to set the shipping date a few days to a week earlier than the due date to account for potential delays.

  • The bank will send the check on the date you choose, but it may take longer for your business to receive it.

Set up recurring payments so you don't forget bills.

  • You can set up automatic payment frequency , for example, paying rent on the 1st of each month.

  • Most banks allow you to schedule payments months, even up to a year, in advance .

  • This solution is particularly useful for fixed expenses such as mortgages, insurance, or recurring services.

Step 4: Confirm transaction information and payment method.

Double-check all details before confirming.

  • Before completion, the bank will display a summary of the scheduled transaction .

  • Please carefully review important information such as:

    • Name of the business receiving the payment

    • Amount to be paid

    • Selected payment date

    • Payment method (ACH or other methods)

  • Only confirm if all information is accurate to avoid errors that could be difficult to resolve later.

Please note the case where the bank cannot process the payment using ACH.

  • In some situations, the bank is unable to connect to the business's system to process ACH payments.

  • In that case, the bank will simply send you a paper check without any further action required.

Understanding the processing time when paying with paper checks.

  • Even if you pay by check, the money will still be deducted from your account on the date you selected .

  • However, businesses may have to wait up to 5 business days to receive payment.

  • Therefore, for businesses that don't support electronic payments, you should schedule your payment earlier than the due date to avoid missing the deadline.

Part 2: ACH Debit: A convenient, automated monthly payment solution

Step 1: Prepare your bank account number and routing code.

Find the account number and routing number to set up your ACH debit.

  • If you have a bank check , the necessary information is usually found on the line at the bottom of the check .

  • If you don't have a check, you can look up the routing number directly on the official website or app of your bank.

  • To set up ACH debit payments , you need to provide the following information:

    • Bank account number

    • Bank's routing number

Understanding the security level of routing numbers correctly.

  • Routing numbers are not as sensitive as personal account numbers.

  • Therefore, this information is usually publicly available and easily accessible through the bank's official channels.

Troubleshooting when your personal account number cannot be found.

  • If you are unsure of the full account number , please:

    • Call the bank's customer service hotline.

    • Alternatively, you can visit a branch/transaction office directly for assistance.

  • Verifying the correct account number from the outset helps set up accurate ACH payments , avoiding errors such as incorrect deductions or delayed payments.

Step 2: Complete the authorization form to set up ACH payments.

Fill out the payment authorization form with the business.

  • The company will require you to fill out an ACH payment authorization form to allow them to deduct money from your bank account.

  • This form can be in paper form or an online form on the company's official website.

  • Completing the authorization form correctly is a mandatory requirement for establishing a valid ACH debit payment .

Verify the signature in the correct format.

  • With this form, you need to sign it directly by hand .

  • With online forms, electronic signatures are generally accepted and have equivalent legal validity.

  • This step signifies your consent to allow the business to automatically collect payments on an agreed-upon basis.

Provide accurate account holder information.

  • In addition to your bank account number and routing number , you need to enter:

    • The full name is exactly as it appears on the bank account.

  • Matching the account holder's name helps the bank verify the transaction, reducing errors such as rejected payments or unsuccessful fund deductions.

Step 3: Confirm the date and amount for each transaction.

Choose the appropriate payment method for each invoice.

  • When confirming the transaction, you will choose to pay in a single lump sum or set up automatic payments .

  • With recurring bills, automatic payments ensure that money is deducted on the same day each month , eliminating the worry of missing deadlines.

Determine the amount payable for each type of invoice.

  • If the bill has a fixed monthly amount , that amount will be used as an automatic payment.

  • If your bills change monthly (like electricity or water), you usually have these options:

    • Pay the exact balance due.

    • Or set a maximum limit to control spending.

Actively monitor through notifications from the company.

  • Approximately one to two weeks before the payment date, businesses usually send a notification about the amount that will be deducted.

  • This gives you time to check bills, prepare a budget , or make adjustments if needed.

Step 4: Sign and submit the payment authorization form.

Submit the authorization form with a valid signature.

  • By signing and submitting the form, you officially authorize the business to deduct funds from your bank account according to the registered schedule.

  • A signature can be handwritten on a paper form or electronically signed on an online form; both are valid for verification.

Read the authorization terms carefully before signing.

  • Before confirming, please carefully read the ACH payment authorization details , especially:

    • The time when money is withdrawn from the account

    • How to handle insufficient account balance on payment date.

  • Understanding the terms and conditions helps you avoid unnecessary risks.

Please note the risk of fees being charged if the payment is unsuccessful.

  • If an ACH payment is returned due to insufficient funds, some businesses may automatically resend the debit order multiple times .

  • This can easily lead to penalties or transaction return fees piling up quickly if you don't address it promptly.

  • Ideally, ensure your account has sufficient funds before the deduction date or contact the business immediately if you notice any problems.

Step 5: Monitor the transaction and verify it with the business.

Observe the test transactions on the bank account.

  • After registering for ACH payment, businesses typically make a very small test transaction (just a few thousand dong or a few cents).

  • The purpose is to verify that the account number and routing number you provided are correct .

  • If this test transaction is successful, you don't need to do anything further ; the payment system will be activated.

Handling when transaction verification fails

  • If a test transaction fails, the business will usually proactively contact the customer to verify the information.

  • The most common cause is:

    • Incorrect bank account number entered

    • Incorrect routing number entered

  • Then, you just need to check and provide the correct information to complete the setup.

Part 3: 4 benefits of using ACH: cost savings, high security, proactive spending.

Benefit 1: Save on transaction fees when paying with ACH.

Lower fees compared to debit or credit cards.

  • ACH payments are typically not subject to transaction fees from banks, credit unions, or businesses .

  • Meanwhile, when using a debit or credit card , you may incur additional fees or transaction processing charges .

  • Many businesses have already included this fee in the service price, so users often find it difficult to realize that the actual cost is higher .

Significant savings when paying recurring bills.

  • If businesses charge an additional "convenience fee" for card payments , switching to an ACH will save you tens of thousands of dong each month .

  • These savings may seem small, but they add up significantly over time , especially with bills paid regularly every month.

You may be eligible for a discount when signing up for automatic payments.

  • Some businesses offer discounts to customers who register for autopay using ACH .

  • The reductions are usually not large, but they are stable and long-lasting , suitable for those who want to optimize their living expenses.

What do businesses need to prepare to receive ACH payments?

  • If you are a business owner and want to accept ACH payments , you need to register with a suitable payment processing service .

  • Popular platforms today allow businesses to easily obtain ACH, manage cash flow effectively, and reduce costs compared to traditional cards .

Benefit 2: Higher security compared to personal checks or debit cards.

ACH payments are secure thanks to processing within the banking system.

  • ACH transactions are processed and reconciled through the central bank system , instead of going directly through multiple intermediaries.

  • After payment information is established, the entire process is handled internally between banks , reducing the risk of data leakage.

  • Compared to personal checks or debit cards, ACHs are less risky in terms of fraud and information theft .

No need to share account information with the business.

  • When using a bank bill payment to create an ACH credit payment, you do not need to provide the business's bank account number .

  • The bank will process the payment on your behalf, ensuring the complete protection of your personal financial information .

  • This is a suitable option for users who prioritize safety, privacy, and risk control when paying bills online.

Benefit 3: Faster and easier transaction processing and control.

The money will be deducted on the date you selected.

  • With ACH payments, the money will be deducted from your account on the exact date you set , although the business may receive the money 1–2 days later.

  • This gives you peace of mind that the bill has been paid , avoiding worries about forgetting deadlines or overspending.

  • Having money flow out of your account immediately allows you to manage your cash flow more clearly and proactively compared to many other methods.

Less affected by weekends or holidays

  • The ACH system does not process transactions on weekends and holidays .

  • However, in practice, if the due date falls on a weekend or holiday, businesses often automatically move the deadline to the next business day .

  • Therefore, this causes virtually no inconvenience for users when paying bills online using ACH.

Benefit 4: Use automatic payments to avoid missing bills.

Set up automatic ACH payments for recurring expenses.

  • When you set up automatic ACH payments , you don't need to remember or repeat the process every month.

  • Money will be automatically deducted from your account on schedule , regularly, and consistently.

  • This method is particularly effective for fixed bills such as rent, insurance, and internet, helping to avoid missed deadlines and penalties .

Reduce the pressure of managing monthly bills.

  • Bills are processed "on time," you just need to monitor your overall budget .

  • Once cash flow is clearly scheduled, worrying about bills can almost disappear .

Monitor your balance to avoid overdrafts and extra fees.

  • Although automatic payments are convenient, you should still check your account balance regularly .

  • Ensure your account has sufficient funds before the withdrawal date to avoid overdrafts, penalty fees, or returned ACH transactions .

  • Combining automated payments with proactive budget management helps you control your finances more safely and effectively .

May mà tiết kiệm được phí, coi như an ủi tinh thần.

Mình từng nghĩ thanh toán hóa đơn online bằng ACH sẽ phức tạp lắm, ai dè chỉ vài cú click là xong. Giờ mỗi tháng tiền điện, nước tự động bay khỏi tài khoản nhanh hơn cả tốc độ mình bay ra quán cà phê. Tiện thì tiện thật, chỉ hơi buồn vì chẳng còn cái cảm giác ‘quên đóng tiền rồi chạy đi nộp’ nữa.

ACH is processed directly within the banking system, reducing the risk of data leakage compared to using cards or checks. When using bank bill payments, you don't need to provide your account number to the business, ensuring information security. This is a safe, cost-effective, and increasingly popular option for Vietnamese users who want to manage their expenses effectively.
